ASTM A582 PDF

The specified properties may not be similar to other forms such as forgings and wires. With most of the free-machining stainless steels, the machinability can be improved by adding sulphur, which leads to the formation of manganese sulphide inclusions. Addition of sulphur also reduces the formability, weldability and corrosion resistance of stainless steel flat bar to below that of grade stainless steel. Because of their high machinability and low cost, grade stainless steel rod are available in highly tempered, hardened or unhardened forms. Martensitic steels with high hardness are manufactured using methods that require final hardening and tempering treatments.

More A It includes rounds, squares, and hexagons in the more commonly used types of stainless free-machining steels designed especially for optimum machinability and for general corrosion and high-temperature service. Bars may be furnished either hot finished or cold finished in one of the conditions specified. Materials shall adhere to specified chemical composition requirements.

At least one hardness testing shall be made midway between surface and center on each lot to determine that the material conforms to hardness requirements. Also, test methods and definition for hardness testing are presented.

This abstract is a brief summary of the referenced standard. It is informational only and not an official part of the standard; the full text of the standard itself must be referred to for its use and application. ASTM does not give any warranty express or implied or make any representation that the contents of this abstract are accurate, complete or up to date. Scope 1. Stainless steel bars other than the free-machining types are covered in a separate specification Note 2.

The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI metric units are to be regarded separately as standard: within the text and tables, the SI units are shown in [brackets]. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents: therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other.

Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification.
