He was born in August of , and he died 73 years later in May of He had a novel-turned-movie win Academy Award for best picture and original story for screenplay.
He joined WWII, and the pubic interest had changed, so his work declined quickly. The woman accused this man of raping her, and her husband was not too pleased, and he wanted to kill Photo-Finish. Emily is infatuated with the young man in the cell and they talk. The two were going to run away to San Francisco together, but by the time she got back, she was too late.
The woman and her husband and his friends had come and killed the young man. Come to find out that Saroyan himself did not find this to be one of his best because it was not as critically acclaimed as other pieces he had written. Just the title in general made me wonder what kind of play could it be, it had so many different possibilities. Reading about the playwright himself had also drawn me to it because most of his his plays and short stories were about his past and what he had known, yet this was not.
I had read an overview of the play, and i found interesting that such a short play could show two strangers in love. I loved the way Saroyan uses love at first sight within this play.
I thought even though theses two young characters did not know eachother, they felt connected, and I loved how the playwright had shown that these two outcasts could feel like they were apart of something. Even though it was a tragedy, I found it inspiring. I thought the play, though short, was fantastic. I do not think high school theater productions would do well with this play just because the shortness of the play, the actors must be able to really sell their characters, and I think college level productions would do better with it.
Two strong actors who can really show that they go from being alone to being together even thought they area stangers and separated by cell bars are needed. For the technical, very little is needed because the only place the play takes place is within a jail, but the audience must feel like the are within an older jail, so the lighting must me dark and musky. I do believe this play, performed well, could be very entertains for all.

HELLO OUT THERE! Reflections on William Saroyan’s play
Hello out there! Apparently my teacher had intuitively summed me up as a desperately lonely young man who had drifted into the city to gamble with destiny. She was correct. I had arrived at Penn Station a few months before from the Midwest with forty dollars in my pocket. I could barely understand a word people were saying there, they were talking so fast and with a funny accent. But I did manage to get directions to the cheap hotel, where I arrived scared to death by the crazy cab ride uptown.
